ACCT is partnering with Ride Share, Jaunt, CTS and UTS to put on a fun and worthwhile Clean Commute Day. Make sure to come out and visit us at our tables on Friday in front of the free speech chalkboard on the downtown mall or in front of Clark Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia during lunchtime. We will have lots of information about commuting, food and fun!

The Commuter Information Team of Charlottesville VA is a task force of local organizations committed to creating clean commute options in the greater Charlottesville area.

REWARD: The winning design will become our logo to be used in ads and on the web. We will debut your logo in our new Clean Commute Day promotion.

The Bike Virginia program supports programming that take place all across the state to make biking, walking and other human-powered pursuits safer and more accessible.

We are driven by the need for non-motorized opportunities for both transportation and for recreation for health, for economics, and for the environment.

Be a part of this special event for fun, for fitness, and to help make Virginia a better place to visit and a better place to live.

ACCT is offering registration for people who wish to register for one day rides. One day riders can ride on Saturday, June 20 and the route will take you to Scottsville and back.

The Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation is currently creating a School Travel Plan for Charlottesville and Albemarle County school systems. The plan, funded by VDOT, is intended to identify safety hazards that currently exist in the existing infrastructure and facilities in and around your school. Once completed, the School Travel plan will make recommendations to the city, county and Virginia Department of Transportation for needed improvements that will enhance your safety as you and your child(ren) walk and bike around the school. Grants are available within the state of Virginia to make improvements that are recommended in your school’s travel plan.

The purpose of this survey is to ascertain what safety barriers you encounter as you walk or bike with your child(ren) to and from school. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey and identify safety hazards on the map. The data collected will remain anonymous and will be utilized in identifying the top five priority projects and programs that your school needs to be a safe environment for walking and biking students.

We will be creating a little bike ‘zine with the best stories. We will have a debut of the zine in March during the Festival of the Book. (March 18-22).

I shot this footage during a trip to the Tokyo suburbs a year ago. What is striking to me is how far this local government has gone to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe on a busy road lined by big box stores and auto dealerships (similar to 29 North in its commercial make-up). Even in a “sprawl” zone like this, they’ve managed to put in wide sidewalks for use by walkers and bikers that are separated from traffic by a line of bushes and trees, and they’ve required this big box store (J-Mart, similar to our K-Mart) to man the main automobile entryway so that bicycles and pedestrians can cross and enter safely. Not surprisingly, local residents have responded by traveling to these shopping destinations on foot and by bike. Our family of four lived near this location eight years ago and relied entirely on bikes to do our shopping.
